Recipe | Ina's Homemade Applesauce

I just love the way the house smells when there's something baking or roasting in the oven---especially when there's apples and cinnamon in the recipe.  Today, I decided to make Ina's Homemade Applesauce.  I love this recipe.  It's so easy!
I save Bonne Maman preserve jars----the Hubster likes them for the garage.  I like to use them for vases, candle holders, mixing homemade salad dressings, storing leftovers.  Today, I used them to put homemade applesauce in.

                                                                                                                     Preheat oven 350* F
3  pounds Mc Intosh Apples (6-8)
3  pounds Granny Smith Apples (6-8)
2 large navel oranges zested and juiced
1  lemon zested and juiced
1/2   cup light brown sugar packed
1/4  tablespoon unsalted butter
2  teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2   teaspoon allspice

Add zest and juice of oranges and lemon in large bowl.
Peel, quarter, and core apples.
Toss apples in bowl with zest and juice.
Pour apples and juice in nonreactive Dutch oven or casserole dish.
Add brown sugar, butter, spices---stir together.
Cover and bake 1 1/2 hours or until apples are soft.
Mix and whisk until smooth.

Serve warm or room temperature.  Keep leftovers refrigerated.

The boys love this applesauce!  It is a nice after school snack and pairs well with roasted pork loin or pork chops.

                                                                        Happy Fall!
