Recipe | Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookies

I can't believe that September is nearly over.  Every year the time seems to pass by faster.  The days are becoming shorter with the sun setting earlier each evening. There's a slight chill in the air that is beckoning autumn.  This is the beginning of baking season for me.  I'm not quite ready for all-things pumpkin-spice.  To me, September is apple and pear time, and there's so many ways to prepare them---sweet or savory.  When I'm in the mood for something sweet & simple---Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookies are an easy treat to make, and I always have the ingredients on hand in my pantry.  The dough balls can be frozen and prepared when the craving hits----perhaps, with a cup of tea or coffee in the afternoon.

1  cup butter
1/2  cup powdered sugar
1/2  cup sugar
1  egg, room temperature

1/2  teaspoon cream of tarter
1/2  teaspoon baking soda

granulated sugar/decorator's if desired

Preheat oven to 375* F.

Method:
Combine butter, powdered sugar, and 1/2 cup sugar in large bowl.
Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy.
Add  egg and vanilla; continue beating until well mixed.
Reduce speed to low, add flour, cream of tarter and baking soda.

Shape dough into 1 inch balls.
Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.
Flatten to about 1 1/2 inches with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar, sprinkle with decorator sugar if desired.

Let stand for 1 minute, remove from cookie sheets.

To freeze cookie dough balls, place on parchment-lined cookie sheet until solid, then bag by the dozen.  Add 1 to 2 minutes to baking time when baking from frozen.
